Ah, the day just wouldn’t be complete here in Mexico without a least one ecotaxi mowing down a pedestrian and trying to run from the scene.
As was the case with the 32 year old Monterrey, Nuevo Leon taxi driver Jesús Martínez Pérez. At 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday, while rolling through downtown Monterrey, he happened upon a woman crossing the street and just happened not only to hit her, causing significant damage to his hood and windshield, but attempt to escape. Little did Jesús know, but his great Hollywood style escape was to be foiled eight blocks ahead. How, you might ask. Did he run out of gas? Did his tires go flat? Did his conscious kick in, forcing him to return out of guilt, concern and dispair?
No, No, and No to all of the above. Turns out Jesús, forgot the primary rule of taxi cab/pedestrian hit and run 101: Always check the hood, roof, and trunk for any telltale bodies or pieces of bodies which might be encrusted in your cab before attempting to run.
Martinez Perez was stopped 8 blocks from the scene of the accident with the his 35 year old victim, Jovita Alvarado Martínez, bloodied and writhing in pain on the roof of his taxi.
Incredibly, once stopped and questioned by the police the dapper driver exclaimed:
I had absolutely no idea she was there.
No shit! I guess the huge dent in the roof, moans, and blood dripping down from above was just not enough of a hint. It probably would of been better for him had he just told the truth and answered: So, thhhhaaaat’s were she went. It’s like, Damn, she was there one moment on my hood and my windshield, then poof, just disappeared, I thought I was trippin’ or something.
The good news is, although Ms. Alvarado was found to have quite a bit of alcohol on her breath, a compound fracture of her right tibia, and a nasty gash on her forehead, her wounds, were not live threatening.
Mr. Martinez, although accepting responsibility, has chosen to take his constitutional right of the 20th amendment, and remain silent. His insurance will cover all medical costs incurred by Ms. Alvarado.
